“Cynical and wicked” imposition on occupied Iraq

Aid agencies and NGOs across the globe have been reacting with horror to the news that new legislation in Iraq was carefully put in place last year by the United States that will effectively bring the whole of the country’s agricultural sector under the control of trans-national corporations. This spells disaster for the Iraqi government and the country’s farmers, paving the way for companies like Monsanto and Syngenta to control the entire food chain from planted seed to packaged food products.

JOHANNESBURG – South Africa is pushing ahead with genetically modified (GMO) commercial crops, but many other African countries shun them.

GMO use widespread. Monsanto says 20 to 30 percent of South Africa’s maize crop and 80 percent of its cotton crop are now GMO. But opposition remains, with environmental pressure group Biowatch winning a court case forcing the government to disclose data about where GMO crops are grown

BROOKLIN, 13 febuari (IPS) – Een internationaal verbod op de controversiële terminator-technologie is vrijdag overeind gebleven. Canada zette de aanval in op het de facto moratorium tijdens een tussentijdse vergadering.

Hoewel de universiteit niet voor honderd procent uitsluit dat een deel van de schade door actievoerders is aangericht, zoals aanvankelijk met stelligheid door VROM werd verkondigd, staat het vast dat hazen de appelbomen hebben aangevreten.

Het Braziliaanse gebied Paraná kan als test-case dienen om te laten zien dat een parallelle exportstructuur van gen-vrije soja naar bijvoorbeeld Europa mogelijk is. Directe handel met de boeren biedt kansen voor eerlijke handel. “Cut the middle man, ofwel omzeil de multinational”, aldus GroenLinks-europarlementariër Kathalijne Buitenweg.

De regering-Bush heeft altijd volgehouden dat de invasie van Irak bedoeld is om democratie te brengen in het Midden-Oosten, niet om nieuwe zakelijke kansen te scheppen voor Amerikaanse bedrijven. Maar uit een pas gelanceerde studie staat nauwkeurig beschreven hoe Amerika’s topman bij de Irakese bezetting, L. Paul Bremer III, eenzijdig de octrooiwetten van Irak heeft herschreven ten faveure van multinationals die genetisch gemanipuleerde gewassen verkopen. Irakese boeren mogen zaad van de oogst van het jaar ervoor langer poten als het om een ‘beschermde’ variant gaat.

Biotechnology appears to be withering as a food source

The promise of biotech crops — foods genetically engineered to resist pests and weeds or even to produce drugs for humans — may be going to seed.

After years of significant growth, the number of biotech crops in the regulatory pipeline has plummeted, says a report out today from the Center for Science in the Public Interest, a group that supports a cautious approach to biotechnology.
